Listen to Marty on “The Life Lessons” Podcast…and Learn about His Bloody “Yard Sale”

Michael Einbinder-Schatz heard about this neighbor who’d been a tennis champion and had seen Marty Devlin’s tennis court from the street. Michael thought Marty would make for a great interview for his podcast “The Life Lesson Collective.” Click here to listen to their conversation and more about a man Michael called “captivating.” Whether you read Marty’s memoir or not, you’ll find it a superb, entertaining interview and well worth listening to.

The day Michael had Marty over to interview him, Marty walked toward his host’s living room/recording studio. He was fooled. Missed a step down.

Marty did a yard sale!

Marty took a head-first dive, narrowly skimming by the corner of the table with the floor fast approaching. Bracing himself as best he could with his left arm, he was soon sprawled out, head hitting the floor, arms, legs, and knees scraped and bleeding. After a few moments of shock, on the part of both Marty and Michael, his host helped Marty up, bandaged him to staunch the bleeding, and offered that they would meet another day.

No way! I’m fine, said Marty.

And the show—or podcast—went on. Never one to back down from a challenge, Marty spoke with Michael for well over an hour. Marty then went home, elated about the interview and a bit worse for wear.

*A yard sale is what ski patrollers call a wipe out on the slopes when poles and skis and skiers go every which way.

How (Really) Was Marty?

Once his wife, Mary Ellen, caught wind of what happened, her antenna went up. “Fine” for Marty doesn’t always mean fine. He’d hit his head, his wrist and ribs ached, and he had enough scrapes and bruises to scare Frankenstein. Mary Ellen drove Marty to see the orthopedic doctor (Marty had a fractured wrist) and later that day to the emergency room at Capital Health. His head was fine, according to Marty and the ER doctors, but an x-ray led them to suspect three of his ribs were broken. Concerned the ribs would poke into his lung, they were preparing to transport Marty to a trauma center in Trenton. A couple of hours later they did a CT scan. The ribs were okay. Whew! That was at 1:00 am. Marty and Mary Ellen were so happy to head home. Marty drank his beers. Marty and Mary Ellen watched the DVR of news anchor David Muir. They finally ate dinner around 2:00 am. Marty was now officially “fine.”

In Case You Were Wondering…What Is a Podcast, and How Can I Listen to Marty’s episode?

A podcast is a recording available online for anyone to hear—on their phone, their tablet, or their computer. A podcast can be on any number of themes and typically has a host who features guests. What topics do podcasts cover? Well, that’s up to the imagination of the podcaster. Jason and Travis Kelce have one of the most popular podcasts in the country. It’s called New Heights and focuses on football and popular culture. NPR puts radio programs like Fresh Air into podcast form. You can study other languages and cultures on podcasts. The world is wide open! Podcasts are available whenever and often wherever the listener wants to hear them, so they’re more flexible than a radio program. You can listen to podcasts in the car, while walking or jogging, and while you’re cooking.
