Marty Devlin’s Book Update

What About That Book?…

By Ann LoPrinzi

Oh, yea, the book! Many people have been asking when Marty’s book will be out and that’s a legitimate question. Bottom line is that we don’t have an exact time yet, but let’s say we’re rounding third base. I will say that this has been an extraordinary experience for Marty. It started several years ago when he begin writing things in longhand. You are correct in assuming that Marty isn’t up on technology, so after he amassed pages and pages of scribble, I  agreed to type it. Since then, there were the typical back and forth revisions and it was put into a reasonable facsimile of a real book.

Enter Cathy! Cathy is an experienced professional editor who took what we gave her to another level. There were interviews and additional stories. There were also unavoidable delays. As most of you know, Mary Ellen went through breast cancer treatments that involved chemo and radiation. There was research and fact checking and photos to gather and preparing a chronological history and getting an Intro from good buddy Dave Haggerty. There were family situations and trips that took priority. Marty’s busy life of teaching tennis to his “ladies,” playing golf, family stuff, and home maintenance and improvements kept going.

Marty has lived his life looking forward more than backward so the process of writing the book has challenged Marty’s memory. He has so many fascinating stories and also has worked hard to unearth many things he didn’t initially remember. As he looked at old clippings, was prompted by questions, thought about the past, more memories came to light, so relevant experiences were added.

For Marty, this experience of writing a book has been a journey of self-discovery. He has learned much about himself and has acquired an even greater thirst for knowledge. He has seen his life in a different perspective and has an even better understanding of what makes him tick and how his principles were developed. His life story is quite remarkable, and we look forward to that time when everyone can enjoy reading about it.

So stay tuned!
